History of Powerball lotteries – Tracing the roots

The Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) formed on September 16, 1987. It is a non-profit organization which started after a collective decision by the U.S lotteries. During the early days, West Virginia, Oregon, District of Columbia, Rhode Island, Kansa, and Iowa were the ones offering this lottery. A month after the formation of the association, Missouri joined and started selling tickets.

During the initial years, the organization ran Lotto America, which allowed players to pick seven numbers from 1 – 40. If four digits matched the winning numerals, you would win $5. To hit the jackpot, players needed to get all the seven numbers. However, the odds of winning were quite low, as the chances were 1 in 18 million. Also, the winners could only take 20-year annuity. As a result, they couldn’t cash out the winning amount.

The history of US Powerball lotteries starts on April 22, 1992, when the organization held the first drawing. It was the first game that used two drums to draw numbers, which was a huge game changer. Due to this variation, it reduces the odds of winning, allows in the creation of various prize levels, greater jackpot odds, and increase in manipulation.

History of Powerball Lotteries – Introducing multiple changes to the lottery

There was a huge change on November 2, 1997, as the annuity increased from 20 to 25 years, along with the option to cash out. As per the annuity, the winners will get an overall of 30 graduated payments, which increase by 5% every year.

Another change occurred on March 7, 2001, with the introduction of Power Play, an optional multiplier. It allowed players to increase their non-jackpot winnings up to a maximum of five times the original amount. They needed to pay an additional of $1 for every game they participated. To select the Power Play number, MUSL used a wheel.

In 2009, there was a change in the matrices to five numbers from 1 – 59 and one digit from 1 – 39. As a result, the probability of winning the jackpot increased. In 2012, there was a format change, as the minimum jackpot amount increased to $40 million. The number of red balls reduced to 35, from 39.

In the history of Powerball lotteries, there was another change in 2015, when the pool for white balls increased to 69 from 59. The second matrix observed a change from 26 to 35. While this move improved the chances of winning, it reduced the odds of hitting the jackpot.
